Dr. Carlson joined Communication Studies in 2015. Her scholarship lies at the intersection of persuasion and interpersonal influence, focusing on emerging adult decision-making and communication of parental advice/support during this transitional life-stage. This line of research is published in the Western Journal of Communication and Emerging Adulthood, with further manuscripts in review and a developing book chapter. Additionally, she has several co-authored lines of research detailing communication during decision-making processes in online social networking and group deliberation contexts. Several of these studies are published in Communication Research and Communication Research Reports, with others under review.  Dr. Carlson enjoys engaging with students in the classroom and received a University Housing Honored Instructor award in 2012. Prior to returning to college in 2005 to complete her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D., she worked for five years in the non-profit sector in Western Australia, delivering informational seminars about health education topics. She credits this experience as the source of her passion for teaching and exploring communication processes.
